Executive Director


Reports to: The Board of Trustees


Summary:  The Executive Director acts as the Chief Executive Officer of the organization and is responsible for the overall management and direction of the organization in accordance with its vision and mission. The Executive Director works under the general oversight of the Board of Trustees.


Overview: The Executive Director provides oversight and overall management, planning, vision, and leadership for all aspects of Great Bay Services and its subsidiaries, including programs and services, finance, resource development, human resources, consumer services, communications, and Board development. The Executive Director assumes a leadership role throughout the states of NH & Maine in partnering with collaborating businesses, foundations, government officials, other nonprofits, and supporters. The Executive Director works with the Board and Board Committees to establish vision, policies, strategic focus, priorities, and general scope of programs the center will deliver.




  1. Support and work with the Board of Trustees


  • Take direction from the Board of Trustees and work with the Board to ensure Great Bay Services operates with a clear mission and a long-range strategic plan that is consistent with the mission.

  • Provide leadership in developing Great Bay Services as an effective, high-quality statewide service provider.  The Executive Director will work collaboratively with Board members and representatives of other service providers both locally and nationally to strengthen and provide resources.

  • Keep the Board informed about issues and events which impact Great Bay Services as a service provider.

  • Keep the Board of Trustees fully informed of conditions, opportunities, issues, and challenges for Great Bay Services and the environment in which it operates so that the Board can carry out is governance, financial oversight, and leadership role.

  • Provide for the coordination of Board meetings and communications.

  • Serve as a staff member to all Board Committees unless otherwise directed.

   2. Management of Office

  • Provide overall staff direction and supervision (directly supervise program management staff), develop a yearly work plan with staff which includes goals, objectives, inputs, and outcomes, and timeline for the programs and services to be carried out by Great Bay Services.

  • Responsible for ensuring the organization stays within approved plans and budgets.

  • Develop contacts with outside vendors, professional organizations, and capacity builders, and introduce staff quality assurance and supervision strategies to assure effective performance.

  • Represent the organization in negotiations with contractors.

  • Effectively manage the human resources of Great Bay Services in a manner that supports a productive, professionally competent work force in an environment respectful of personal well-being and cultural diversity.

  • Manage hiring, firing, and resolution of grievances.


   3. Manage Finance and Fundraising

  • Develop annual budget (at a minimum zero-based) and submit to Board for approval.

  • Closely monitor expenditures and income, plan and execute actions that assure core budget self-sufficiency.

  • Develop and direct fundraising plan including Major Donors, Annual Fund, Grants, Corporate Sponsorships, and Events.

  • Develop and maintain relationships with funders of Great Bay Services.

  • Contract for and oversee annual audit.

  • Maintain capital assets of the corporation.


   4. Develop and Coordinate Advocacy Efforts

  • Develop advocacy strategy and submit to Board for approval.

  • Build relationships with state and local government officials.

  • Develop relationships with state and national organizations involved in nonprofit issues.


   5. Management of Program and Services

  • Oversee the development of capacity building initiative, programs, and services as needed.

  • Ensure program quality and consistency with organizational goals through ongoing evaluation of all programs and services to determine effectiveness and participant and consumer satisfaction.

  • Work with Board and staff to develop policies for all program processes.

  • Oversee development and coordination of events and new programs, conference, workshops, publications, website, and endorsed service provider relationships.

  • Develop and maintain corporate and business relationships.


   6. Public Presence of the Nonprofit Sector

  • Serve as lead spokesperson and speaker for Great Bay Services and assure that the organization's mission is properly presented to various publics.

  • Develop the capacity to convene stakeholders around statewide issues affecting nonprofits.

  • Develop effective and ongoing relationships with media.

  • Develop relationships with other associations, organizations, and persons pertinent to the nonprofit sector, coordinate activities and co-sponsor events.




  • Bachelor Degree or higher in Social Service Delivery, Public Health, Business Management, or other relevant degrees.

  • Five years or more of management experience.

  • Outstanding communication skills.

  • Fundraising and legislative skills.

  • Supervisory and personnel experience.

  • Strong financial management background.

  • Experience working with a Board of Trustees.

  • Evidence of commitment to the mission of Great Bay Services.


This is a full-time exempt position.  Salary is commensurate with experience, and a generous benefits package is available
